Startup India is a flagship initiative by the Government of India launched in January 2016 to create a strong ecosystem for nurturing innovation and entrepreneurship in the country. Its core goal is to make it easier to start and grow a business by reducing regulatory hurdles, fostering innovation, expanding access to funding, and providing mentorship and networking platforms.
The initiative is administered and overseen by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT).
To be eligible for Startup India recognition, an entity must:
📌 Be incorporated as a Private Limited Company, LLP (Limited Liability Partnership), or Partnership Firm in India.
📌 Have been incorporated recently — generally within the last 10 years (standard) or up to 10 years for biotech entities too.
📌 Have annual turnover ≤ ₹25 crore in any previous year.
📌 Develop an innovative product, process or service with potential for scalability and job creation.
📌 Not be formed by splitting up or reconstructing an existing business.
This eligibility framework ensures the programme supports early-stage, high-growth ventures rather than established businesses.

Note: Recognition is separate from legal incorporation — you must first incorporate your business legally before applying for recognition.
